Questions & Answers for ISLAM TODAY
"The Word 'Shee'ahtihi' in the Quran"

Thank you so much for your Email and your question regarding Islam. It is wonderful to see people like yourself taking the time and interest to learn more about the correct teachings of Islam. This in itself is a sign of guidance from the Almighty Above. May He grant us the wisdom to know the right knowledge and the ability to put it into practice, ameen.

Now as regards your question:

This shia claims that Shiaism is the correct way to practice and that Shia's
have been mentioned in the Qu'ran.
I can't remember what Surah he stated but can remeber what it was about. he said that When Musa (AS) enetered the city he saw two men arguing one of the men was a shia and the other one was an egyptian. This person claims that
the isralie who asked Musa (AS) for help was a shia. I checked this out in My english Qu'ran and i saw this verse but i did not read of a shia being mentioned!!
The Ayat said that the person who asked Musa (AS) was of his own kin an isralie
The surah is Al-Imraan and it is ayat Number 103. Ins'sha'allah i have quoted the correct information.
I have read some of the information about different sects in islam on your website and agrred with it.
Some of my friends say that shia's have made up their own qu'ran!! they say that they have translated it using wrong words!!! i don't know if this is true.
but i would like to ask you wether from your knowledge have you seen the sect shia been mentioned in the qur'an. if you want i can send you the ayat which he sent me.

Bismillah Al Hamdulilah was Salat wa Salam ala rasoolulah. Maa baad:
Allahu Alim.
In the Name of Allah, I praise Allah and thank Him and ask for His Peace and Prayers upon Muhammad, and all of the prophets of Allah, ameen. It is only Allah Who has all the Knowledge, and we only have what He might give us.
To continue:
First of all, I must admit that you had me for a minute or two. I know that particular part of the Quran rather well and I'm sure that there is nothing there that contains the word in Arabic for 'shee'atihi' or anything like it.

So after double checking it just to see if I missed something I confirmed that this must be incorrect. This is actually the famous ayah which mentions that we must all "Hold fast to the rope of Allah all together and not be divided among yourselves and remember Allah's favor on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together so that by His Grace, you became brothers (in faith) and you had been on the brink of a pit of fire and He saved you from it."

However, based on your mentioning of Moses, peace be upon him, and the man that he killed, this ayah is in Al Qassas 28:15 and it reads like this:

15. And he entered the City at a time when its people were not watching: and he found there two men fighting,- one of his own people, and the other, of his foes. Now the man of his own people appealed to him against his foe, and Moses struck him with his fist and killed him. He said: "This is a work of Satan: for he is an enemy that manifestly misleads!"

For a better understanding of the use of the word 'shee'atihi' which is actually used twice in this ayah, there needs to be a little understanding of the Quran and the use of words in it.
First of all, it is HARAM for a Muslim to make 'tafseer' or 'tatweel' of the Quran without having knowledge of Classical Arabic and the rules for 'tafseer.' He could very well put himself out of Islam through self imposed misguidance and even be thrown into the Fire. May Allah save and protect us from that, ameen.

Next, we should look at the structure of the sentence and the actual word used and see if this type of meaning could be understood from the verse. So, again now here is the verse with the transliteration into English letters and hi-lighting on the word in Arabic:

["wa da khalalmadenati 'alaa Heni ghaflatim min 'zhlihaa fawa jada fehaa ra Hulayni yaqtatilaani hatha min she'atihi
Wa haatha min 'aduwwihi faastaghathahul latheena she'atihi 'alaal lathee min 'aduwwihi fawa kazahu musa faqaDhaa 'alayhi. Qala hathaa min 'amalish shaytaani. Innahu 'aduwum muDhilum mubeen."]

And he entered the city at a time of unawareness of its people, and he found there two men fighting, - one of his party (his religion - from the Children of Israel), and the other of his foes. The man of his (own) party asked him for help against his foe, so Mûsa (Moses) struck him with his fist and killed him. He said: "This is of Shaitân's (Satan) doing, verily, he is a plain misleading enemy."

So what does this phrase "min shee'atihi' mean? Good question.
The understanding of the word means in this case "tribe" or "group"or "people" or "party" as in the correct translation above:
"of his own people"
It could also be correctly translated as: "of his own tribe." or "of his own group." Or "of his own party." And all of them would be correct. But none of them give the meaning that being a "Shi'ite" is the correct belief in Islam.

The term "Shi'ite" when used by these people refers to the word which comes from this same root and it means a: "supporting member of a group" or "shee'ah Ali" (supports of the group of Ali, radiallho anho). This is their main claim, that they are the 'supporters' of Ali. But does this imply that we are not? Wrong! All true Muslims believe in Ali as the great and noble leader that he was and certainly that he was one of the Rightly Guide Khulafah. The problem with the 'Shiites' of today is that they want to elevate Ali, radiallaho anho, to the level of prophet or even as having influence and power with Allah. And of course this is 'shirk.' So, that doesn't work.
Other problems they have include the 'infallibility' of their 'imams' and the 'infallibility' of the 'Ahl Bayt' (members of the household of the prophet, peace be upon him); defaming and insulting many of the close companions of the prophet, peace be upon him, and even some of his wives especially Ayesha; rejecting hadeeths in Bukhari and Muslim simply because they conflict with their beliefs or because they hate the companion who narrated the hadeeth such as Abu Bakr or Omar or Abu Hurayrah.

The list goes on and on. The problem is that most of the shi'ite today do not even know what their religion teaches or where it came from. Abdullah bin Saba was a Jew who infiltrated the Muslms by pretending to become a Muslim, at a very critical time in the development of the Muslim state. There was a serious problem in dealing with uniting and holding the 'ummah' (nation of the Muslims) together. Khalifah Uthman, radiallaho anho, had just been assasinated. Ali was trying to unify the forces together and Mawiyah ibn Abu Sufyan was trying to oppose Ali, radiallaho anho, because Ali wanted to bring everyone together before going after the murderers of Uthman. Mawiyah was a cousin to Uthman and felt that things were not going right as they should and he witheld his 'bayah' or pledge to Ali until the muderers were brought ot justice. Of course with someone acting behind the scenes trying to make things worst by carrying stories and tales and adding his own opinons as much as possible, Abdullah bin Sabah was in a perfect situation to try to bring down Islam from the inside. He worked both sides against the other. He made every effort to destroy from within. We could compare him to Saul (Paul of the New Testament in the Bible). He developed his own thinking and teachings of Islam and others he trained kept it going after he moved on.

There are many web sites and books on this subject from both points of view of Sunnis and Shi'ites. But probably the best opinion is to say that they are Muslims as long as they believe "Laa elah illah lah, Muhammadan rasoolulah." But then it is up to them if they mean it or not. If they believe that Allah wanted Ali to be the leader immediately after prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, then what are they saying about Allah? That He cannot make things happen the way that He wants to? Allah save us from this kind of thinking, ameen.

Whenever Allah wants anything, He merely says: "Kun fayah kun." (Be and it is.)

---------------------------------------------------

Again, it is only Allah who has All Knowledge. May He forgive me my mistakes and guide us all to the right way, ameen?

Jazakalah khair and may Allah continue to guide you, ameen.

Wa As-Salam alaykum wa rahmatulah wa barakatah,
