Questions & Answers for ISLAM TODAY
"Who is Dr. Rashid Khalifah?"
And Who Are 'Submitters International?'

Thank you so much for your Email and your question regarding Islam. It is wonderful to see people like yourself taking the time and interest to learn more about the correct teachings of Islam. This in itself is a sign of guidance from the Almighty Above. May He grant us the wisdom to know the right knowledge and the ability to put it into practice, ameen.

Now as regards your question:

Brother Yusuf, What you think about Dr. Rashad Khalifa message? It is very important and urgent, please advise.
(remember to watch for key words in the questions -- he says 'very important and urgent' this could mean that he is involved with these people, or maybe a sister from them is talking to him for marriage or he is trying to argue with them but is not knowledgeable enough)

Bismillah Al Hamdulilah was Salat wa Salam ala rasoolulah. Maa baad:

Allahu Alim.
In the Name of Allah, I praise Allah and thank Him and ask for His Peace and Prayers upon Muhammad, and all of the prophets of Allah, ameen. To continue:
It is only Allah Who has all the Knowledge, and we only have what He might give us.

In a book written by an American scholar, Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Phillips, the entire subject of Mr. Khalifa and his ideas and concepts was totally covered.
(I love to refer to established scholars and their works. It gives your answer proper credibility, insures protection from ego and shayton (hopefully), promotes their work and increases the rewards)
There is no support for what he has claimed about the Quran having a sequence of miracles all based on the occurrence of the number 19. He used devious and dubious ways of counting and then recounting many letters, words and ayahs in a way that would make him look like a big scholar or even a 'prophet'. Astaghfirullah.

Let us take a quick look at just a few of his major offenses against Allah, Islam and Muslims:
1.) He threw out the last two ayahs of Surah At-Taubah.
2.) He said that ALL HADEETHS are fabricated!
3.) He tricked Ahmad Deedat into writing a booklet about the "Miracle of 19 in the Quran."
(It has since been replaced with another book on the Quran by brother Deedat).
4.) He declared himself better to understand the Quran than the early scholars due to his 'knowledge'
5.) He declared that he was better to understand Quran than the sahabi
6.) He said he was better to understand the Quran than the prophet, peace be upon him.
7.) Ultimately, he declared that he was a prophet himself.
(this man like so many before him, fell for the worst deal of all. Shayton will never let him go, whom he catches by his 'ego.')
These reports came to me from people who were in his halaqah 'circle' of Quran, in St. Louis, MO., in the 1970s. If you know something more please feel free to share it with us.
I like to refer to 'eye witness' reports on as many subjects as I can. But you have to be careful of the sources, just as with anything else. I know these brothers and sisters who were with Rashid Khalifah in Missouri
What about his 'followers?' They are still around and they believe that his death was a form of 'martyrdom' for him. They call themselves 'Submitters International' and they have strong dawah to their 'Islam.'
What are clear problems with this 'sect?'
1.) they do not accept hadeeths (wonder how they know how to pray? -- their early web site use hadeeth to teach salat -- I remember seeing it and wondering how they could be so stupid)
2.) they mix men and women together without concern
3.) no hijab for women (very popular for many folks today)
4.) they operate somewhat like a 'cult' and do not encourage members to go around those 'hadeeth Muslims.'

They are headquartered in Arizona, USA. They have a magazine and a website on the Internet. Their members, at least those I have tried to talk to, are brain washed into what they are doing.

Our esteemed brother and scholar of Islam, Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Phillips has written a strong refutable against this man and his 'teachings.' It should be read by everyone doing dawah work in these days for two clear reasons:
1.) To help stop the spread of this 'Fitnah'
2.) To avoid falling in the same kind of traps ourselves.
When you begin to make dawah, shayton is your big enemy. He hates you and will stop at nothing to shut you down. You are his competitor and enemy. May Allah Protect us from the accursed devil, ameen.

Again, it is only Allah who has All Knowledge. May He forgive me my mistakes and guide us all to the right way, ameen?

Jazakalah khair and may Allah continue to guide you, ameen.

Wa As-Salam alaykum wa rahmatulah wa barakatah,

Your Brother in Islam,
Yusuf Estes
